Fridays (TV series) (Wikipedia.org)

Fridays is the name of ABC's weekly late-night live comedy show, which aired on Friday nights from April 11, 1980 to April 23, 1982. The show was originally 70 minutes long before being expanded to 90 minutes.

The program was ABC's attempt to duplicate the success of NBC's Saturday Night Live. Like SNL, each week Fridays featured music acts and, in the second season, celebrity guest hosts, as well as fake newscasts and spoofs of television shows and commercials.

Fridays (Cartoon Network) (Wikipedia.org)

Fridays, originally titled Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, was the Friday night program block on Cartoon Network that showcased the channel's original animated series, with new episode premieres usually taking place in this block. Around these shows, live action segments in a studio with two hosts and an audience of children are were for continuity between the programs. The block aired between 7 p.m.-5 a.m., with the shows and segments repeating at least twice. Bluetube Productions produced the block's musical scores.

Until June 2007, Friday night was the only evening that was currently programmed for children on the network from 10 p.m.-6 a.m., with Adult Swim originally airing on Saturday-Thursday nights (it started to air seven nights a week in July 2007).

A skit-oriented variety/comedy show, this was an attempt by the ABC network to cash in on the success of Saturday Night Live. The formula is very similar, right down to having fake commercials and a bogus newscast. Written by Afterburner

Essentially, this was the show that everyone was tuning into after The Not-Ready-For-Primetime-Players left Saturday Night Live. SNL's new cast was bombing badly, with only two cast members gaining any recognition (Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo). Fridays was doing well, until reality intruded in the form of Nightline with Ted Koppel. Originally, Koppel's news show was simply an update to the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Each night ABC would begin a summation of the days events in Iran immediately after the local news. Koppel's show became a permanent fixture, and was expanded to a full hour. Rather than start the show on Fridays at 12:30am, ABC tried to move the show to primetime, at 8pm, and on a different day of the week, no less! The last latenight episode featured Melanie Chartoff and Brian Mahler remaining in character but going off script and complaining about going to primetime. And they were right. The latenight audience did not find them, and the show was cancelled shortly thereafter. Written by GrandTetonRider

"Fridays" was a live comedy program themed after "Saturday Night Live," but it did not run in "prime time," it aired after the local nightly news, usually at midnight EST. The comedy sketches were often quite bizzare, especially those involving Richards or David. Also, it did indeed have musical performances, with a much stronger new-wave/punk focus than SNL. Musical guests included the Boomtown Rats (Bob Geldof sang "I Don't Like Mondays"), Split Enz (the Finn brothers sang "I Got You"), and The Clash (Joe Strummer howled-out "London Calling").
