Father Dowling Mysteries (also known as Father Dowling Investigates in the UK) is an American television mystery series that appeared between 30 November 1987 and 2 May 1991, for its first season the show was on NBC, and on the ABC network for its last two seasons. It is based on the adventures of the title character created by Ralph McInerny, Professor of Philosophy, Director of the Jacques Maritain Center, and Michael P. Grace Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
Father Frank Dowling is a fine Catholic priest in a Chicago parish, but drives his housekeeper Marie to despair by his habit to be late for dinner as he and his right-hand, streetwise nun Stephanie 'Steve' Oskowski, from a criminal neighborhood, keep playing sleuth and solve numerous crimes in the neighborhood, usually involving at least one murder, and generally outsmart the police as well as the criminals. Still the in-living Father Philip Prestwick, whose priority are his own ecclesiastical career prospects, takes a very dim view at their crime fighting, as on sister Stephanie even being there. Written by KGF Vissers
In the spirit of "Murder, She Wrote" and "Diagnosis Murder", this series also features a main character in an unlikely profession for solving murders. Wherever Father Dowling and his assistant Sister Oskowsky go, someone turns up dead. While the local police are usually quick to find a likely suspect, the snooping priest just as quickly finds a good reason to take a closer look. Written by Jean-Marc Rocher
