"Electric Eye" is a song by British heavy metal band Judas Priest, from their 1982 album Screaming for Vengeance, and released as a single later that year. Considered by fans as one of Judas Priest's defining songs, it has become a staple at concerts, usually played as the first song.
Introduced by "The Hellion" (previous track on the album), the song concerns a satellite that floats above the Earth; monitoring everything that the people of Earth do. The song contains the line:
I'm elected electric spy
This line insinuates that the Electric Eye has been commissioned by a totalitarian government to spy on the people of Earth. The Eye is clearly portrayed to be a tool of oppression - a way for the government to spy on the citizens.
You think you've private lives,
Think nothing of the kind
There is no true escape
I'm watching all the time
With the lyrics of the last verse in mind (There's nothing you can do about it / Develop and expose / I feed upon your every thought / And so my power grows), the Eye can be considered a metaphor for the repressive government itself - an always-vigilant, nigh-almighty force, forever unreachable by an ordinary man, whose power lies in monitoring one's every step and action.
The rhythm guitar riff during the guitar solo is borrowed from that of the song "Running Wild" (from the 1978 release Killing Machine/Hell Bent for Leather), which is also borrowed by Iron Maiden in their songs "Futureal" and "The Wicker Man."
Benediction, Helloween, amongst many other bands, have covered this song.
"Electric Eye" is featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories for PSP and Playstation 2. It is also a playable track in Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s as a master track, and includes "The Hellion." It is considered one of the hardest songs in the game series.
The guitar solo in this song is played by Glenn Tipton.
This song is referenced in the movie Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny when Jack Black is trying to infiltrate the rock n' roll hall of fame. He curses when he notices a camera pointed at him and sings out "electric eye". It is a part of the song "Break In-City (Storm the Gates)" He is supposed to break into a record company, and "electric eye" is supposed to relate to the cameras. Ironically, he destroys one, and avoids the rest, though the guards watching the cameras are busy talking.
