Edward Dean Winter (June 3, 1937 – March 8, 2001) was an American actor.
Born in Ventura, California, Winter is perhaps most well-known for his role as the Military Intelligence officer, Lieutenant Colonel/Colonel Flagg on the television series M*A*S*H. As Flagg, Winter became one of the program's more memorable and popular recurring characters. Winter appeared in seven episodes as Flagg during the show's 11-year run. Prior to his introduction as Lt. Colonel Flagg, Winter had also appeared on the series as Captain Halloran. A number of fans have expressed the belief that Captain Halloran might have been one of Flagg's many aliases, especially as he said to Dr. Freedman "We played Poker once" which Captain Halloran did.
Another memorable role was as the corrupt Senator Gebhardt in the 1983 movie Porky's II: The Next Day.
Before he was cast on M*A*S*H, Mr. Winter appeared on the daytime serials The Secret Storm and Somerset. He also starred in the NBC primetime drama Project UFO and was featured in the film A Change of Seasons.
Winter was also a recurring character on the primetime 1970's show SOAP portraying Congressman Walter McCallum who was in a relationship with Chester and Jessica Tate's daughter Eunice.
Winter was twice nominated for Tony Awards as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical). The first was in 1967 as Herr Ludwig in Cabaret and in 1969 as J.D. Sheldrake in Promises, Promises.
Winter died in Woodland Hills, California, due to complications from Parkinson's disease.
Sir Edward Winter (1622-1686) was the eighth administrator of Madras and was Agent from 1661 to 1668. During his tenure, he got a permanent agreement regarding the British rights over Madras. Winter was a bold man who arrested his successor George Foxcraft on the ground that he was Puritanical and anti-Royalist. One should remember that this was also the time when the English Civil War took place and the Stuarts had just been restored upon the throne of England. However, Edward Winter was soon deposed and replaced by George Foxcraft, who was the first to be given the title 'Governor of Fort St.George'. Still, Edward Winter refused to vacate his chair and remained Agent until 1668 when he was replaced by George Foxcraft.
Starred in the Broadway musicals "Cabaret" (1966) as Herr Ludwig, and "Promises, Promises" (1969) as J.D. Sheldrake, earning Tony nominations as Best Actor in a Featured Role for both.
Was twice nominated for Tony Awards as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical); in 1967 as Herr Ludwig in "Cabaret," and in 1969 as J.D. Sheldrake in "Promises, Promises."
Perhaps best remembered as the overzealous Colonel Flagg on several episodes of "M*A*S*H" (1972).
