Easy Street is a 1917 short comedy film by Charlie Chaplin.
In the film, the police are failing to maintain law and order and so it is Chaplin, as the Little Tramp character, who steps forward (rather reluctantly) to rid the street of bullies, help the poor, save women from madmen and generally keep the peace.
eanor Standard: In the past, I haven't been all that sensitive to your needs. That's because I didn't want you to have any.
eanor Standard: It's like living with Noel Coward.
eanor Standard: He's the only man I've ever liked. More importantly, he's the only man who ever liked me!
eanor Standard: I thought I had grown, that I'd developed grace and style, that it wasn't just the money they liked. Well, thank you for blowing that illusion to hell.
entin Standard: You people think you're so much better because you used to be poor. Well, you're not better! We're better!
When Charlie the Tramp wanders into a mission he is smitten by Edna and puts back the collection box which he has taken. Reformed, he becomes a policeman and is assigned to rough-and-tumble Easy Street. Unable to trick or beat Eric the Tough, he puts Eric's head in a gas pipe and anesthetizes him. A hero, he now helps many poor people living on Easy Street. Eric escapes jail, Edna is kidnapped, but Charlie (recharged after sitting on a doper's needle) conquers all. Easy Street is transformed as is Eric. Written by Ed Stephan
