Douglas Hodge (born 1960 in Plymouth, Devon, England, UK) is a British actor. Some of his TV appearances include leading roles in Behaving Badly, Bliss, Middlemarch, The Uninvited, The Scold's Bridle, Shockers: Dance, The Law, The Russian Bride, Capital City, Mansfield Park, Spooks and Red Cap. His film appearances include 2004's Vanity Fair.
Hodge has also achieved great success on stage as a performer recently in the work of playwright Harold Pinter (e.g., The Caretaker (Royal National Theatre, 2002), of whom he speaks very highly. He also chose a double bill of sketches by Pinter and The Dumb Waiter as his directorial debut at the Oxford Playhouse in 2004.
During the summer of 2006 he played the title role in William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus at the modern Globe Theatre, in London, and simultaneously made his West End directorial debut with See How They Run, a 40's wartime farce. He also appeared in the 2005 revival of Guys and Dolls in the West End playing Nathan Detroit opposite Ewan McGregor's Sky Masterson, and as the Doctor in A Matter of Life and Death at the National in 2007. Also in 2007, he guest starred in the Doctor Who audio dramas Urban Myths and Son of the Dragon. He is presently (from January to March 2008) appearing as Albin in La Cage aux Folles at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
He has also recorded a debut music album "Cowley Road Songs." His partner is Tessa Peake-Jones, and they have two children.
He was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 2001 (2000 season) for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Caretaker at the Comedy Theatre.
He appeared as the adult Damian Trotter in the "Heroes and Villains" episode of Only Fools and Horses in 1996. Damian Trotter's mother in the programme was Raquel Turner who had been played by Hodge's real-life wife, Tessa Peake Jones, since the character of Raquel was introduced to the show in the 1990s.
