Don Cherry (ice hockey) (Wikipedia.org)

Donald Stewart "Grapes" Cherry, (born February 5, 1934 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada) is a hockey commentator for CBC Television. Cherry co-hosts the "Coach's Corner" intermission segment (with Ron MacLean) on the long running Canadian sports program Hockey Night in Canada. He is known for his outspoken manner, flamboyant dress, and staunch patriotism.

Prior to his broadcast career, Cherry was a National Hockey League player and coach. He is also well-known as an author, syndicated radio commentator for The Fan Radio Network, creator of the Rock'em Sock'em Hockey video series, and celebrity endorser. Many consider him to be a Canadian cultural icon.

Don Cherry (jazz) (Wikipedia.org)

Don Cherry (November 18 1936-October 19 1995) was an innovative jazz trumpeter whose career began with a long association with saxophonist Ornette Coleman, and who would go on to live and work with a wide variety of musicians in many parts of the world.

Don Cherry (singer/golfer) (Wikipedia.org)

Donald Ross Cherry (born January 11, 1924) was a singer of traditional pop music and a golfer.

Cherry was born in Wichita Falls, Texas. He started as a big band singer, in the orchestras of Jan Garber, Victor Young and Tommy Dorsey. In 1951 he recorded his first solo hits, "Thinking of You" and "Belle, Belle, My Liberty Belle", the latter of which had a better-selling version by Guy Mitchell. In 1955 came his biggest hit, "Band of Gold". He had three more hits in 1956 ("Wild Cherry", "Ghost Town" and "Namely You"), all of them backed by famous orchestra leader Ray Conniff. He was also the well known voice of the "Mr. Clean" commercials during the late 1950s and early 60s.

Throughout his singing career, Cherry was also a top ranked amateur golfer and was actually in contention to win the 1960 U.S. Open before eventually finishing in the top 5, behind winner Arnold Palmer. In 1962, Cherry decided to turn professional. In fact "Pro" was his nickname amongst his fellow entertainers and his skill on the golf course was matched only by his volcanic temper which, he said, "...made Tommy Bolt look like a choir boy!". Cherry also won the Sunnehanna Amateur in 1954.

Don Cherry recently published his biography "Cherry's Jubilee" with co-writer Neil Daniels (Founder: Dean Martin Fan Center). He also just released a new CD with his best friend Willie Nelson. The new CD is called "It's Magic" on the DiamonDisc Records label and it is distributed in the USA & Canada by the Allegro Media Group.

His grandson Peter Cherry currently attends Fordham University and is a member of the Rams' golf team.

Don Cherry gained notoriety in the late 1950s through legendary Ornette Coleman recordings featuring his cornet/trumpet playing(his playing of novel horns, such as the pocket trumpet is also notable); include The Shape of Jazz to Come(1959) and Free Jazz(1961), the latter bred an entirely new sub-genre of jazz itself. After leaving Coleman and playing on with John Coltrane on The Avant-Garde(1961), he signed a deal with the influential Blue Note record label to release three albums. The first of

The Green Ray
An excerpt of Don Cherry's 'Brown Rice' played at the Standard music venue in Walthamstow, 2007. Not the best version they've ever performed, but the flavour is there.
