David Copperfield is best known from the BBC 1980s sketch show Three of a Kind, in which he starred alongside Tracey Ullman and Lenny Henry. His real name is Stanley Barlow. He was born and raised in Yorkshire, where he began his professional career performing in various cabaret venues. His big break in TV earned him appearances on Wogan and Cliff and Friends. Three of a Kind ran from 1981 to 1983. After that he worked on his own shows Coppers & Co and Copperfield Comedy Company.
He is friends with Mick Abrahams of Jethro Tull.
A TV mini-series adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, following the life of young Copperfield as he grows up under the care of the cruel Murdstones, travels to London where he meets the gentle Macawbers and the unctuous Uriah Heep, and falls in love with and marries the pampered Dora. In 1993 David was doing an on-stage illusion in which he weightlessly flew with a lady from the audience in his arms. His flight illusion was considered by experts and historians of magic to be the greatest illusion ever performed on stage.
He gave his first performance as a magician in 1968 when he was only 12 years old.
He was a Professor of Magic at New York University at only 16 years old.
He was a student at Fordham University in New York City in 1974.
He was named "Magician of the Year" in 1980 and 1987 by the Academy of Magical Arts.
Owns one version of Edgar Bergen's dummy of "Charlie McCarthy". He purchased "Charlie" at an auction for $110,000.
