David Burke (born May 251934 in Liverpool) is an English actor, known for playing Watson in Granada Television's 1980s Sherlock Holmes series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which starred Jeremy Brett in the title role.
Burke was born in Liverpool, England and trained at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His strong and intelligent depiction of Watson was hailed as closer to the original Conan Doyle stories than previous screen incarnations. However, he left the series after thirteen episodes, concluding with The Final Problem, in order to spend more time with his wife the notable actress Anna Calder-Marshall, and their son Tom Burke, who is also an actor, as well as to return to working in the theatre. He was succeeded as Watson by Edward Hardwicke, whom he himself recommended to the production team.
His most recent on-screen appearance was in a BBC Four adaptation of the John Wyndham story Random Quest, shown on 27th November 2006.

Burke began his career at Bolton Wanderers in 1977, making his league debut as an 18-year-old on September 2 1978, in a 2-2 draw at Birmingham. He remained at Burnden Park for four years, making 69 league appearances and scoring one goal.
In 1981 he moved across the Pennines to join Huddersfield Town. He went on to make almost 200 appearances for the West Yorkshire club.
He signed for Steve Coppell's Crystal Palace in 1987. He won promotion via the play-offs to the top flight with Palace in 1988-89 and was a runner-up to Manchester United in the 1990 FA Cup Final.
Burke returned to his first club, Bolton, in 1990 and made over 100 appearances for the club.
In 1994 he joined Blackpool, who had just appointed Sam Allardyce as their manager. Allardyce was a former teammate of Burke's in his first spell at Bolton in the late 1970s.
After two years with the Seasiders, Burke hung up his boots and retired from the playing side of the game.
