David Brenner (born February 4, 1936 ) is an American standup comedian, actor, author, and filmmaker.
Born and raised in poor areas of Philadelphia, Brenner found comedy a major source of relief from the daily trials and tribulations he faced in his youth. His sense of humor led to his immense popularity in his school years, winning Brenner the title of "Class President" every year. After high school, he attended Temple University, where he majored in mass communications, graduating with honors.
Making his national television debut on the The Tonight Show, he has since become the most frequent guest on the show, with over 150 appearances. Since the majority of his jokes deal with current events, mostly political, he has become somewhat of a political pundit, and has been a guest on several news-oriented shows in the recent past, and was also ranked #53 on Comedy Central's "100 Greatest Stand-Ups."
Prior to beginning his standup career, he wrote and directed over a hundred made-for-TV documentaries, which garnered him many awards, including an Emmy. He is also the author of four books, and is currently working on his fifth. He recently became engaged to Olympic figure skater Tai Babilonia.
He is not to be confused with the David Brenner (sometimes credited as David S. Brenner) who has edited many films, including Independence Day.
David Brenner is an American film editor most well known (along with fellow film editors Joe Hutshing, Pietro Scalia and Julie Monroe) for having been one of director Oliver Stone's 'hot shot' group of up-and-coming film editors.
He and Elizabeth Slater were married in Las Vegas during Brenner's live HBO comedy special.
Married and divorced three times.
Lived with Charisse Brody from 1980-83. They had 1 son.
In 1976 he was to co-star as a divorced hairdresser in the beautician comedy series "Snip," a TV takeoff of the Warren Beatty movie "Shampoo." Just before its scheduled September 30th debut, NBC abruptly canceled the show -- so fast in fact that TV Guide did not even have time to remove a special feature on the show in its Fall Preview of September 18-24. Why? One of the show's supporting characters, a fellow hairdresser named Michael, was openly gay and NBC got cold feet at the last minute. Had "Snip" premiered, it would have been a first on American series TV. Instead, Billy Crystal went on to receive that honor with his gay character a year later on the popular series "Soap." Seven episodes of "Snip" were completed when it got the ax. The only place the series ended up airing was in Australia, and it became the highest rated show in Australian history at that time.
Attended Temple University where he graduated with honors, majoring in mass communication.
In high school, was elected class president each year and "Class Comedian."
Appeared on "Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The" (1962) more times than any other guest.
