Common Law was a 1996 ABC television network Sitcom.
Common Law focused on John Alvarez (Greg Giraldo), the seemingly-token Latino at a large, WASPy law firm. John had a degree from Harvard Law School, but never forgot his working-class Queens roots, nor the idea that law was about protecting the "Little Guy" from the major corporations that were his firms' key clients. He was starting a clandestine affair with fellow attorney Nancy Slaton (Megyn Price), clandestine because the firm forbade lawyers dating each other to minimize claims of sexual harassment. To the disgust of his barber father, Luis (Gregory Sierra), John wore his hair long and played guitar; his father viewed him as a hippie. What his father's other views were remain largely unknown; the series was cancelled after only four episodes had aired.
Ten episodes were produced but only four aired before cancellation.
All the episode titles began with "In the Matter of..."
Based on Greg Giraldo's real-life experience as an attorney for a Manhattan law firm.
