Charles Hallahan (July 29, 1943 – November 25, 1997) was an American actor.
Hallahan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated from Rutgers University, then going on to Temple University to earn a Masters degree in fine arts. During his acting career he was often cast as a police officer, and is possibly best known to TV viewers as LAPD Captain Charlie Devane on Hunter. He was memorable for his portrayal of the nameless "Coach" in Vision Quest, opposite Matthew Modine.
One of his most famous roles is as Norris in The Thing. The documentary The Thing: Terror Takes Shape was dedicated to his memory. In 1997, Hallahan was cast as Liam Bilby in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Honor Among Thieves", but died of a sudden heart attack during production. Nick Tate agreed to assume the role in Hallahan's memory. His brother Kenneth is a Roman Catholic priest serving in New Jersey.
Hallahan died in Los Angeles, California and is buried in Cobh Harbor in the south of Ireland.
Beefy, Philadelphia-born Charles Hallahan was often cast as cops, both good and bad, mainly because the map of Ireland was written all over his face. A graduate of Rutgers University, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Temple University in his hometown. After spending some time in regional theater, he headed west to Los Angeles to break into films and television. He spent a good deal of time on stage in L.A., and quickly began racking up television and movie credits. He was a regular on the detective series "Hunter" (1984) - as, what else, a cop - and turned in a standout performance as a corrupt, racist detective in a story arc on "Hill Street Blues" (1981). He also appeared in such films as Silkwood (1983), Kidco (1984), Executive Decision (1996) and Dante's Peak (1997). He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles in 1997.
