Chance is the directing debut of actress Amber Benson (best known from her role as Tara Maclay on Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Benson directed, wrote, produced and starred in this 2002 independent film. Featuring many of Benson's co-workers from Buffy, including co-star James Marsters (Spike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), the film was estimated to cost $25,000 to make.
As documented on Chance's official site, the cost of making the film ended up being more than triple the estimate. Though Benson originally thought that she would foot the bill herself, she decided to ask fans for support. Signed photos of Benson on the set of the film, as well as scripts and props were sold to raise money.
Amber Benson's production company, Benson Entertainment, distributes the movie on DVD and video.
After a daring robbery of a jewelery store, the thieves accidentally let their loot fall into the unsuspecting hands of repo man and secret alcoholic Zach. When the crime lord behind the heist learns of the whereabouts of his diamonds, he instructs his thugs to find Zach and get the jewels back by any means possible. Zach gets help from his friend, police detective Chance, but they will both need more than a little luck to prove that neither of them were behind the robbery, and to keep the actual thieves from getting their revenge. One man haunted by his past...Another forced to confront his future
'Chance' is a black comedy about how hard it is to find "the one". Mostly told from the point-of-view of a young, sexually aggressive woman, named Chance, whom according to her: "we're all out there looking for true love", which turns out to be a very elusive thing indeed, and Chance is no exception. She's desperately on the prowl for a man, but since she's more mouse than cat, she get's herself into scrape after scrape in her screwball pursuit of love. Surrounded by a bevy of adoring but completely wrong-for-her men (and one dead girl from Manchester, England), Chance has to pick her way through her messy life in order to figure out which guy is "it". Chance (Amber Benson) is a single, neurotic, 20-something woman living in Los Angeles trying to get by any way she can (waitressing, acting, etc.) Her one true goal in life, as her frequent narration to the viewers, are to find her 'Mr. Right'. The people in Chance's life are Simon (James Marsters), her slacker roommate and telemarketer whom has a crush on her, but is too much in denial to admit it to her or even himself; Rory (Rayder Woods), a struggling actor and Chance's ex-boyfriend with massive crush on her, but he's too boring for her to be interested; Milton (Nate Barlow) is her creepy voyeuristic neighborhood whom lusts after her; Jack (Andy Hallett) is a struggling singer whom Chance finds attractive, but unaware that he's gay; Guy (Shamus Murphy) is another person in Chance's life whose romance is cut short by an accident; Sara (Tressa DiFigla) is a young and outgoing bisexual woman from Manchester, England whom after a one-night stand with Chance, ends up dead from a drug OD, or does she? And then there's Chance's mother Desiree (Christina Estabrook) who's even more crazy than Chance, and distraught over her husband Malcolm (Jeff Rickets) divorcing her to be with his personal secretary.
