In his 16 test matches French scored 309 runs at an average of 18.11, took 38 catches and made one stumping.
French saved two young girls from drowning while on a test tour in Pakistan when he came across them by chance and has a trivial pursuit question about him for this.

French attended the University of Iowa and majored in speech and theatre. He is married to actress/singer Eileen Barnett.
