The conflicts between conservative rancher Barrett Fears, one of Hawaii's wealthiest and most powerful men, and his headstrong son Mitch punctuated this series set and filmed in Hawaii. Much like another series about ranchers, "Bonanza", family was at the center of most of the characters' problems, as well as the day-to-day difficulties of running a ranch as large as the Paradise and occasional battles with the natives.
