The song had originally been released in 1981 by Spider, a band from New York City with co-writer Holly Knight as a member. The Tina Turner version was extremely successful on the radio charts of the United States and the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart. It peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached a peak of six on the US R&B/Hip-hop chart radio charts. At the 1985 annual Grammy Awards, "Better Be Good to Me" won the Grammy award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. It is still one of Tina Turner's most popular and recognizable songs.
