The film tells the story of Norman Bethune, a Canadian doctor who was a partying wastrel until a bout with TB dramatically changed his attitude. He became dedicated with the goal of helping others both in the Spanish Civil War and in China where his ceaseless work to help the people of China in the beginning days of World War II made him an honoured hero in Communist China. A documentary of the life of Canadian doctor Norman Bethune including archive footage of the man himself and interviews with those who knew him personally, this film traces his life from his beginnings with his deeply religious family in Ontario, through his medical studies in school and beyond. It was during his studies that he developed his overwhelming compassion for those less fortunate, and his driving desire to see that they received the medical attention they needed. Most of his life after college was spent either working in war zones around Europe or developing new treatment techniques in his home country. He died in China 1939 from blood poisoning contracted while caring for soldiers and civilians fighting against Japan. Written by Jean-Marc Rocher
