Bad Blood (1981) is a film set in the small West Coast town of Koiterangi (now Kowhitirangi), during World War II, and is based on the factual manhunt for mass-murderer Stanley Graham. Directed by English director Mike Newell, much of the film was shot at the original locations.
While Davie (Alan Cumming) befriends Alan Venters (Jim Shield), the serial rapist responsible for his girlfriend's HIV related death and his own infection; he struggles to find the perfect means of revenge. Davie soon learns that Venters' only weakness is an imagined connection to his long-estranged six-year old son, Kevin (Josh Ballard). With time running out, Davie pursues a relationship with the Mother (Claudette Mink), but only to use the innocent child as the means to send the remorseless Venters to a horrifying demise. The school scenes were filmed at a real school in Scarborough, and the children used as extras in the scenes and the girls who played Kelly's Friends, were pupils at the school.
The actress who was supposed to play Tessa couldn't make it, so the part was spilt in two and given to two other actresses.
The funeral scene used real flowers that were made up for a funeral the following day, an already dug grave and a coffin that was being used the next day which unnerved some of the cast.
Kenny Richards (III)'s oldest child was featured in the film but was never credited.
