Anna Christie (1930 film) (Wikipedia.org)

Anna Christie is a 1930 MGM drama film adaptation of the 1922 play by Eugene O'Neill. It was adapted by Frances Marion, produced and directed by Clarence Brown with Paul Bern and Irving Thalberg as co-producers. The cinematography was by William H. Daniels, the art direction by Cedric Gibbons and the costume design by Adrian.

The film stars Greta Garbo, Charles Bickford, George F. Marion and Marie Dressler.

It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress (Greta Garbo), Best Cinematography and Best Director. This pre-Code film is the movie that used the marketing slogan "Garbo Talks!", as it was her first talkie. Her first spoken line has become her most famous: "Give me a whiskey with ginger ale on the side, and don't be stingy, baby." George F. Marion had performed the role of Anna's father in the original Broadway production and both the 1923 and 1930 films.

Anna Christie (1923 film) (Wikipedia.org)

Anna Christie is a 1923 silent film adaptation of the play by Eugene O'Neill, made by First National Pictures. It was adapted by Bradley King, directed by John Griffith Wray and produced by Thomas H. Ince.

The film stars Blanche Sweet, William Russell, George F. Marion and Eugenie Besserer.

Anna Christie (1931 film) (Wikipedia.org)

Anna Christie was a 1931 German language film version of the 1930 film starring Greta Garbo, based on the play by Eugene O'Neill.

This production was released in early 1931. Like its sister version, it was made by MGM. It starred Greta Garbo, Theo Shall, Hans Junkermann and Salka Viertel. This version was adapted by Frances Marion and the dialogue written in German by Walter Hasenclever and Frank Reicher. It was directed by Jacques Feyder. This version was shot simultaneously with the English-language version. It used the same cinematographer, sets and costumes, but a different crew. Garbo was the only actor in both versions and noticeably differs in her appearance in the two versions. According to the 2005 DVD release of the film -- which included both the English and German versions -- Garbo much preferred the German version.

It has been 15 years since Chris has sent 5 year old Anna to live with relatives in St. Paul, and now she is coming back. Anna needs rest and a place to stay so Chris moves Marthy off his barge. One night, going down the coast, they rescue 3 survivors of a boat sinking. The big strong Scot, named Matt, takes a liking to Anna and they go to Coney Island when they get back to land. Matt decides that he will marry Anna but Chris says no - as does Anna. Every male member of Chris's family has died at sea and Chris wants Anna to have children and a house on land. This causes friction between Chris and Matt so Anna sits them down and tells both of them the truth about her miserable life in Minnesota and the secret she has been carrying. Written by Tony Fontana

Old sailor Chris Christofferson eagerly awaits the arrival of his grown daughter Anna, whom he sent at five years old to live with relatives in Minnesota. He has not seen her since, but believes her to be a decent and respectably employed young woman. When Anna arrives, however, it is clear that she has lived a hard life in the dregs of society, and that much of spirit has been extinguished. She falls in love with a young sailor rescued at sea by her father, but dreads to reveal to him the truth of her past. Both father and young man are deluded about her background, yet Anna cannot quite bring herself to allow them to remain deluded. Written by Jim Beaver
