Amanda Root is a British stage and screen actress (born 1963 at Cheltenham in Essex), now best known for her television appearances. She trained for the stage at Webber Douglas.

Acted as narrator and host for a documentary on Jane Austen (I)'s life which is played continually at the Jane Austen Centre in Bath, England.

Was originally sought by Emma Thompson to play the role of Marianne in Sense and Sensibility. Root participated and was at the original script read-through. However, by the time the film was finally being made, she was already attached to appear in another Jane Austen film, Persuasion. The role eventually went to Kate Winslet.
