Alexander Karpovtsev (Russian: Александр Карповцев, born April 7, 1970 in Moscow, USSR) is an ice hockey player. He played for the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders and Florida Panthers. He is, along with Alexei Kovalev, Sergei Zubov and Sergei Nemchinov, the first Russian player to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup winning it in 1994.
While he was a very talented player, Karpovtsev had the reputation as being very "soft". He would routinely fake or exaggerate injuries in order to get out of playing, which was made famously public the day he was traded from the Blackhawks to the Islanders when Chicago radio announcer Pat Foley went into a brutal tirade about him (blank">http://www.umich.edu/~moday/karpotsev.mp3). Many believe he could have been one of the all-time greats but he simply didn't care about hockey.
September 7. 1993- Traded by the _Quebec Nordiques to the New York Rangers in exchange for Mike Hurlbut.
- October 14, 1998- Traded by the New York Rangers, along with the Rangers 1999 4th round draft choice, to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Mathieu Schneider.
- October 2, 2000- Traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs, along with Toronto's 2001 4th round draft choice, to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Bryan McCabe.
- March 9, 2004- Traded by the Chicago Blackhawks to the New York Islanders in exchange for New York's 2005 4th round draft choice.
- July 14, 2004- Signed as a free agent with the Florida Panthers.
