Alain Whyte (born 3 July, 1967) is a guitarist who has been Morrissey's main songwriter since 1991. He is English and his name is pronounced "AL-an", not "a-LAIN" in the French fashion.
Whyte has contributed significantly to the Morrissey albums Your Arsenal (1992), Vauxhall and I (1994), Southpaw Grammar (1995), Maladjusted (1997), You Are the Quarry (2004) and Ringleader of the Tormentors (2006).
In 2005 Whyte debuted a new band in Los Angeles on April 30 called Red Lightning. The band listed U2, The Clash, The Cult, The Smiths and Morrissey as its influences. Red Lightning split in late 2006.
Whyte has also performed in the bands The Rugcutters, Born Bad, The Memphis Sinners, The Memphis Flash, Johnny Panic, Crash Action, The Gazmen, The Motivators, and sang alongside Davey Havok from AFI performing background vocals for Tiger Army on their fourth album Music from Regions Beyond. Whyte also performed two songs live as a guest guitarist for Great Glass Elevator at the Troubadour in 2007.
