"Afterglow" is a song by Australian rock band INXS, released as the second single from the band's eleventh studio album, Switch, on 25 April 2006.
The song was written by Andrew Farriss and Desmond Child, and was a tribute to Michael Hutchence, one of INXS' founders, who was alleged to have committed suicide in 1997. In singing the song, J. D. Fortune, winner of Rock Star: INXS, described his role in Hutchence's legacy—his "afterglow". The song is described as "soft rock", with melody reminiscent of INXS' earlier work with Hutchence.
"Afterglow" peaked at #10 on the ARIA Singles chart, spending 24 weeks in the top 50. The song reached #22 on the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, and #20 on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks. "Afterglow" appeared on the Kuschelrock, Vol. 20 compilation released in September 2006.
The video for the single features actress Estella Warren and J. D. Fortune in a loft in downtown Los Angeles. JD Fortune walks alone on the empty Sixth Street Viaduct and is later joined by the rest of the band of INXS.
"Afterglow" is the closing track from the 1976 Genesis album Wind & Wuthering.
The song was composed by Tony Banks, who described it as a "spontaneous" piece that was written in about the same amount of time as it takes to play it.
Arguably the best-known song from Wind & Wuthering, "Afterglow" became a staple on Genesis tours for over 10 years, from the 1977 Wind & Wuthering Tour until the 1986/7 Invisible Touch Tour blank">http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=33:x0rvad5kl8x3 It was played as part of the 2007 _Turn It On Again: The Tour, as part of a medley that also included "In The Cage", "The Cinema Show", and "Duke's Travels" blank">http://www.genesis-movement.org/tioa2007europe.html.
A _Moog Taurus bass pedal is used to create a drone effect on which much of the song is structured. Live versions of the song appear on the live albums Seconds Out , Three Sides Live and Live Over Europe 2007. The live versions usually contain a musical 'quote', in the form of a distinctive drum riff, from the Frank Zappa song "Trouble Every Day", a song that Chester Thompson (who augments the band when they play live) learnt when a member of the Frank Zappa band (1973-1974).
"Afterglow (Of Your Love)" is the unofficial final single released in 1969 by the English R&B group the Small Faces the song managed to reach #36 in the UK Singles Charts.
In March 1969 the Small Faces officially broke up, with Steve Marriott going on to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton and Greg Ridley.
Andrew Loog Oldham almost immediately released an unofficial final song by the group called "Afterglow (Of Your Love)" an R&B ballad, with the contrasting rock sounding B-side "Wham Bam Thank You Mam".
The band never publicised the single and so it only managed to reach #36 in the UK charts. The following November Immediate released a final unofficial album entitled The Autumn Stone it included many of their hits, including unreleased material and three live tracks recorded at Newcastle City Hall.
