The 2007 French presidential election, the ninth of the Fifth French Republic was held to elect the successor to Jacques Chirac as president of France for a five-year term.
The winner, decided on 6 May 2007, was Nicolas Sarkozy. The first round of voting took place on Sunday, 22 April 2007. As no candidate obtained an absolute majority, a second round between the two leading candidates, Nicolas Sarkozy and Ségolène Royal, took place on Sunday, 6 May 2007.
Sarkozy and Royal both represented a generational change; Sarkozy is the first president born after World War II and the first not to have been in politics under Charles de Gaulle; Royal shares those same characteristics.
