Illness caused director Goulding, Edmund to be replaced for much of the film. Litvak, Anatole shot approximately 26% of the film, Keighley, William 4%, and Howard, William K. (I) shot a few retakes. Goulding shot 70% of the picture around bouts of pneumonia.

Pregnancy caused Geraldine Fitzgerald (I) to miss several shooting days. A double was used where possible.

Remade as a segment of "Love Boat, The" (1977), with Forsythe, John (I) and Andress, Ursula in the lead roles. This was part of the two-hour season-opening special "The China Cruise" (7.1, 1 October 1983).
