Poltergeist: The Legacy is a Canadian/American horror television series which ran from 1996 to 1999. The series tells the story of the members of a secret society known as the Legacy, and their efforts to protect humankind from occult dangers. Despite the Poltergeist name, there seems to be no real connection between the show and the original trilogy aside from it being intended as a spin-off from them.

Poltergeist: The Legacy debuted on Showtime, and all first-run episodes premiered on that network, though they were later syndicated. After the third season, Showtime cancelled the show, though soon after, the rights were purchased by the Sci Fi Channel, which continued the series for another season. This same pattern was later followed by Stargate SG-1, which also debuted on Showtime, was also sold into syndication, and was itself rescued from cancellation by the Sci Fi Channel.

The fourth season of Poltergeist: The Legacy featured an episode starring WWE wrestler The Undertaker as a being from Hell who collected souls - a deliberate cross-over with RAW, which was also airing on the USA Network at the time and earning the network some of the highest ratings on cable TV. It was hoped that this cameo would help boost awareness of the new show, and thus, generate a larger audience (just as USA had attempted to do by having Shawn Michaels appear on Pacific Blue).

"The Legacy" is a secret society that began many centuries ago to accumulate knowledge and artifacts to help fight against the evil in the world. This particular Legacy team is set in San Francisco in a castle-like house on Angel Island. Dr. Derek Rayne (Derek de Lint) heads up the team comprised of psychiatrist, Rachel Corrigan (Helen Shaver); priest, Philip C. "The Legacy" is a secret society that "has been here forever" to a group of people that fought the Darkness and evil that would just as soon take over our realm. To the world they are curators and seekers of ancient artifacts. The name of their organization is the Luna Foundation. Each team is a part of a House - Houses located all around the world and making a network of guardians against evil. The series pertains mainly with the San Fransisco House, led by their Precept (boss, head of the House) Dr. Derek Rayne, their House/home located on a small island isolated from the rest of San Francisco called Angel Island. The original team included ex-Navy SEAL, Nick Boyle (Martin Cummins), researcher/psychic Alex Moreau (Robbi Chong), security/researcher Julia Walker (Jordan Bayne) and Father Philip Callahan (Patrick Fitzgerald). Julia Walker (although brought back by a number of fanfics, lost her life during the pilot. After the pilot episode the team gained a psychiatrist Rachel Corrigan (Helen Shaver) and her daughter who will most likely become a member when she gets older Kat Corrigan (Alexandria Purvis).
